Green tea has long been used by the Chinese as medication for the treatment of headaches, body pain, and poor digestion, and the improvement of health and life expectancy. In the 21st century, green tea extract is used as a means to lower cholesterol, slow down arthritis, prevent the growth of cancer cells and assist in weight loss.
More than 1,800 scientific studies suggest that green tea is rich in polyphenols and flavonols. The most powerful antioxidant contained in green tea, Epigallocatechin Gallate, commonly referred to as EGCG is over 200 times more potent than vitamins C and E together in fighting free radicals and pro-oxidants. In other words, a cup of green tea contains more antioxidants than a serving of spinach, carrots, broccoli or strawberries because it is bioflavonoid rich.
In particular, the health benefits of green tea extract can be summarized as follows:
a) Lowers LDL cholesterol
Scientific studies suggest that green tea lowers LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Middle-aged men and women who drink 2 or more cups of green tea per day can keep their LDL (bad) cholesterol in normal levels. People who drink green tea after having consumed a fatty food, they are less likely to let cholesterol go into their bloodstream. Therefore, green tea serves as a great replacement of Lipitor or Zocor without the side effects and the chemical process of these medicines.
b) Protects the joints against arthritis
The University of Maryland and Rutgers performed experiments on rats to study the effects of green tea polyphenols on rheumatoid arthritis. The rats that suffered from rheumatoid arthritis consumed green tea in their drinking water for a period of one to three weeks. Researchers concluded that green tea can considerably reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.
Because green tea leaf is anti-bacterial, it prevents inflammation. Green tea extract reduces arthritis by causing changes in various arthritis-related immune responses, it suppresses inflammatory substances and proteins that induce arthritis, and it increases anti-inflammatory substances. Moreover, EGCG prevents inflammatory responses responsible for rheumatoid arthritis.
c) Prevents the growth of cancer cells
The EGCG in green tea extract inhibits cancer cells from growing, thus protecting the development of prostate, breast, and lung cancer.
Two groups of men with a pre-cancerous prostate condition were studied. One group consumed 12 to 15 cups of green tea a day, while the other group did not consume green tea at all. The experiment lasted for one year. Researchers found that only 3 percent of the men who consumed green tea developed cancer. 30 percent of the men who did not consume green tea developed prostate cancer.
Green tea extract is also beneficial for women who have breast cancer because it is high on chemicals that bind estrogen. In doing so, estrogen does not remain free to stimulate breast cancer cells. Moreover, studies have shown that women who consume great quantities of green tea before menopause are 50 percent less likely to develop breast cancer or to develop the severe forms of the disease.
In relation to lung cancer, green tea extract is also beneficial. Studies have shown that smokers who consume green tea are less likely to develop lung cancer.
d) Helps losing weight
Clinical trials have shown that men who eat a high-fat diet and consume green tea are more likely to lose weight. The caffeine provided by green tea in a single cup of coffee has direct and significant effect on weight loss.
The green tea extract boosts the number of calories burned by almost 4.5 percent. This accounts for 135 calories per day, but consuming green tea regularly can help the average man on a high-fat diet lose 18 lbs during a year and the average woman on a high-fat diet lose 11 lbs. This weight loss is calculated without eating less or exercising more.
In conclusion, green tea extract is safe and effective. By being rich in antioxidants, green tea keeps DNA intact and stabilizes the membranes of cells. These effects of green tea make it a powerful support in many health conditions.
